History Meets Modern Design in Durkan’s Crafted Convergence Hospitality Flooring

Durkan believes in everyday art that is created everywhere.

Every year, we here at Durkan are excited to introduce new product lines that we know will enhance and transform hospitality spaces. Crafted Convergence is a new, award-winning soft surface portfolio developed with a rich design history and the most advanced luxury performance construction in the industry. We think you’ll agree, it’s a special collection.

Each part of the design was thoughtfully chosen, right down to the name. “Crafted” refers to the collection’s unique design inspiration – handcrafted arts – as well as the mindfulness and attention to detail that the Durkan team brought to the design process.

Crafted Convergence began as a collaboration with the Durkan design team, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and the Museum of International Folk Art. “We not only wanted to push the envelope by bringing a different approach to hospitality flooring design and innovation but also use it as a platform to honor the cultures represented within this incredible partnership,” explains Elizabeth Bonner, our creative design director.

The museums graciously opened up their archives to our designers, who were inspired by the Native American pottery and baskets as well as Japanese and African garments. Although these items were once used for routine purposes in everyday life, they are now appreciated as works of art, thoughtfully and skillfully created by artisans from each culture.

Careful attention was paid to avoid replicating historical patterns, so our designers created unique designs based on combinations of elements from the multicultural materials. The designers focused on micro-patterns in the original art that translate well to modern aesthetics, paying close attention to the artists’ use of negative and positive space. The result is a modern interpretation that celebrates the original art rather than reproducing it. They then layered the rich visual designs with our innovative Definity™ manufacturing technology. The enhanced surface detailing and precision sculpted textures provide more than twice the definition of other luxury carpets.

The multi-level textures and crisp patterns offer exciting visual and tactile experiences that can be customized to suit any hospitality environment. The varied designs also lend themselves to a variety of formats, so the collection is available in both broadloom and carpet planks.

Crafted Convergence features superior performance and unmatched sustainability, right down to its fiber and backing systems, and all styles contain recycled content. We’re elated that the collection has met with accolades in the hospitality industry. Crafted Convergence was recognized by the International Interior Design Association with a 2018 IIDA/HD Expo Product Design Award in the flooring category for carpet and rugs. The prestigious award was presented in Las Vegas at HD Expo, the premier trade show and conference for hospitality design professionals.

In appreciation of the collaboration with the museums and the cultures they represent, a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Crafted Convergence will be donated to the museum system to help preserve the stories and art that inspired the collection.

This soft surface portfolio is truly a Crafted Convergence of historical culture and contemporary design, artistry and cutting-edge technology, industry and preservation, beauty and performance.
