Durkan D*SCOVER Design Competition Inspires A Rising Star
As they say, it’s amazing what a difference a year can make. Just last year, Kristen Evans was a student at Georgia Southern University. She entered Durkan’s student design competition, D*SCOVER, and thanks to that submission, she now has a full-time position as a designer at Durkan!
Held annually, Durkan’s D*SCOVER design competition allows college students and future designers to demonstrate their talent. Kristen entered the 2015 competition as part of a class project. After her design was named the second-place winner, she was invited to join Durkan at the Hospitality Design Expo (HD Expo) in Las Vegas. HD Expo is one of the hospitality realm’s most exciting shows bringing together designers, architects and more from the industry. During an award presentation at the show, winning students were honored with a cash prize and the chance to meet top designers in the flooring industry. HD Expo was also the perfect venue to display the students’ work, where their talent was on view for everyone to see.
A few weeks after the show, Kristen received a call from Durkan with a job offer and joined the design team in January of 2016. Now, Kristen collaborates with the entire team designing in our brand new Light Lab Design Center at the Green Street campus in Dalton, Ga. Her specialty is working with the Durkan team on custom products.
“Before this contest, I hadn’t known about the many opportunities for designers in the flooring industry,” Kristen said. “Afterwards, I saw the many career options for designers and was excited to start working at Durkan.”
Discovering New Talent
Durkan’s D*SCOVER competition has been encouraging students since 2010. Durkan, along with NEWH, hosts the D*SCOVER design student competition annually and awards the top five submissions with monetary prizes, as well as a trip to HD Expo in Las Vegas for first and second-place winners. The 2016 honorees, Hailey Fonda (grand prize winner) and Megan Cook (second place), were both students from Utah State University.
“The D*SCOVER design competition is an incredible opportunity for both students and the Company,” Director of Design and Creative Strategies Mark Page said. “It allows us to introduce ourselves to talented student designers and show them the many exciting career opportunities offered in the flooring industry.”
